Inspection Requirements for Business Licenses

When your business license application is reviewed and a change of use is identified at the proposed business location (IE. from clothing retail to restaurant), the City will request the applicant complete a Building Permit Application Form to assess the change of use.

To download a Building Permit Application for a change of use (also known as change of occupancy), and understand the requirements of the application submission, visit the Building Permits and Inspections information page.

As part of this permitting process, an inspection by a Building Official and Fire Inspector will be required to ensure that the facility meets the mandatory provincial codes for the new type of business operating at the proposed location.

If you have any questions, or need to arrange for an inspection:

  • Contact the Fire Inspector at (250) 423-4226.
  • To book an inspection with City Building Officials, submit your request via email with 'Inspection Request' in the subject header to Alex Park (alex.park@fernie.ca) and/or Shannon Sewell (shannon.sewell@fernie.ca)

Any changes to the business establishment nature or previous use must comply with the City of Fernie Zoning Bylaw No. 1750.

All signs must comply with the City of Fernie Sign Bylaw No. 1888.
