The City's Planning department manages the city's physical development and growth, as well as providing professional planning advice to Council, other departments, and the public.

This department can answer questions about zoning, development permits, planning initiatives and the City's Official Community Plan, as well as Land Use Applications, and more.

When land outside of the City of Fernie boundary is proposed to be rezoned for development, the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) works with the City of Fernie Planning Department to ensure any concerns are brought forward considered by the RDEK Board of Directors as part of their decision-making process.

The RDEK communicates with the Planning Department through a Referral Process, giving the City of Fernie opportunity to comment on any proposed RDEK zoning bylaw amendments.
