Garbage & Recycling Collection
Changes to Acceptable Waste Container - Bylaw Revisions effective May 9, 2016
Residents are advised that leaving garbage on the curb in plastic bags without an acceptable waste container is no longer permitted. Effective May 9, 2016 changes to Waste Regulation Bylaw #1845 require that all residential waste for curbside collection be contained in rigid plastic or non-corrosive metal containers. Residents are encouraged to use plastic bags to line their waste containers to prevent loose garbage and debris from being blown in the wind when emptied and decreasing odors in the container that may attract wildlife. Please note that recycling materials (properly rinsed) are still permitted in plastic recycling bags.
Acceptable waste containers must comply with the following regulations:
(b) Maximum weight of 22.5 kilograms (50 pounds) when full;
(c) Constructed of rigid plastic or non-corrosive metal;
(d) Water tight cover;
(e) Strong enough to withstand normal handling and lifting;
(f) Opening that permits emptying with minimum effort; and
(g) Handle(s) that enable the container to be lifted and emptied safely by one person.
The bylaw provides a grace period up to May 31, 2016 for residents to obtain waste containers that meet the above criteria. Remember we are a Wild Safe Community! Waste and Regulation Bylaw No. 1845 prohibits garbage from being placed for pickup before 5:00 a.m. on your collection day! Wildlife attractants include antifreeze, paint, petroleum products, food products, food waste, decaying matter and other accessible edible products or waste that attracts wildlife. Waste Regulation Bylaw No. 1845.
