The City of Fernie is located in the Elk Valley, southeastern British Columbia, an area renowned for its world class recreation and outstanding mountain environment.

It is located on Highway #3 (The Crow's Nest Pass Highway) in the extreme southeastern corner of British Columbia, approximately three hours south-west of Calgary International Airport and one hour east of Cranbrook Airport.

Fernie is 15 miles (31 km) south of Sparwood and 26 miles (42 km) from the Alberta/British Columbia border. On Highway 3 to the south is the small sawmill town of Elko (20 miles/32 km).
