Description:

The City of Fernie is inviting applications for the regular full-time position of Bylaw Enforcement Officer. Reporting to the Director of Planning, this position provides bylaw enforcement and animal control services to the community. 

The full-time Bylaw Enforcement Officer will be required to work 7 hours per day, 5 days per week. The hours of work will generally be between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, but may occasionally include irregular hours (early morning, evening, and weekend work) due to the nature of the position, subject to mutual agreement with the Union.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES

• Ensure compliance with all city bylaws
• Respond to public inquiries about possible bylaw violations
• Perform field/site inspections with respect to unsightly premises
• Investigate land use and zoning infractions
• Perform animal control functions
• Respond to parking and illegal dumping violations
• Enforce sprinkling/burning regulations
• Oversee business and pet licensing
• Issue tickets under the Municipal Ticket Information system (MTI)
• Prepare reports for Administration and Council
• Perform other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must possess a valid Class 5 British Columbia Driver’s License
• High School Diploma supplemented with Level One Bylaw Enforcement and Investigating Skills Course, or equivalent.
• Preferred 3-5 years prior job-related experience in a local Government setting and a minimum of two-years’ experience in enforcement work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Must be able to provide an RCMP criminal record/background check and current driver’s abstract.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Well-developed report writing and record keeping skills
• Able to interpret maps and legal descriptions
• Sound knowledge of local Government bylaws, and associated Provincial and Federal statutes, including the Local Government Act and Community Charter
• Able to operate a networked personal computer and operate the computer software programs utilized within the department
• Able to represent the City of Fernie at Court hearings
• Able to work confidently and humanely with wild and domestic animals
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Salary and benefits will be in accordance with the current CUPE contract.  Current hourly rate of pay is $37.99/hr.
