Flood Watch Update: Weather Conditions Improving
May 29, 2026
Forecasting from Environment Canada and the Province indicates less severe conditions for the Fernie area, with less total rainfall than previously projected. Despite this shift, a significant multi-day storm is still anticipated to begin over the weekend. The upcoming storm combined with the high temperatures and existing high river levels still has the potential to cause flood conditions.
The City is continuing to monitor river levels and forecasting and is prepared to respond to any significant changes. Another update will be provided tomorrow afternoon.
We're advising residents to stay well back from rivers and creeks when water levels are high and during extreme weather events as water levels can change rapidly.
If you are worried about localized flooding, you can access the City’s self-fill sandbag station next to the City’s Operations yard on Railway Ave. Bags are provided, please bring your own shovel and gloves.
