Spring Freshet Preparation
May 21, 2026
The City of Fernie forms a Flood Response Committee each spring during freshet, when water levels in our rivers and streams rise due to spring run-off. The Committee ensures we are monitoring river levels and forecasts, and that we are prepared to activate our Flood Response Plan.
The City’s Flood Response Plan guides the response to rising water levels and ensures that the necessary precautions are in place to quickly and effectively respond to any flood situations. These measures include the closure of parks, trails, and roads in low-lying areas, as well as proactive actions such as sandbagging vulnerable stormwater pipes and catch basins.
The BC River Forecast Centre is also monitoring conditions around the province.
You can get up to date information on any high stream advisories or flood watches here at any time:
If you are concerned about localized flooding, you can access the City’s self-fill sandbag station next to the City’s Operations yard on Railway Ave. Residents are asked to bring their own shovel, vehicle to transport the sandbags, and appropriate protective equipment including sturdy boots, gloves, and eye protection.
Personal Preparedness
Now is a good time to refresh on what you can do to be prepared in the event of a flood.
It’s important to ensure that you are flood ready and have a grab and go bag packed in case you are required to leave your home.
