Pine Ave Road Closure Notice and Ridgemont Water Quality Advisory

Starting Monday, July 13, 2026, there will be traffic interruptions and road closures on Pine Avenue, leading up to the Ridgemont Drive intersection, while contractors working on behalf of North Mountain Construction and the Elk Valley Housing Society, work to install underground utilities for the Pine Ave Child Care Centre. Construction is anticipated to be ongoing from July 13 to July 21.

Stage 1: Full road closure on Pine Avenue from Ridgemont Drive to the first driveway access to the Aquatic Centre.

Expected Duration: July 13 from 7:00 a.m. until July 15 at 6:00 p.m.

The road closure is expected to last 3 days. The detour route will be signed to direct residents to use Coal Creek Road, to St. Margaret’s Road, and down Ridgemont Drive (as shown in the map below). Although it will not be signed, residents can also use access from downtown to the Mountview neighbourhood on 1st Avenue and Park Avenue to connect back to Cokato Road and Pine Avenue. To minimize dust, the City treated the detour through Coal Creek Road in advance.

Pedestrians and cyclists can go through the Aquatic Center parking lot and use the trail past the volleyball courts and along the Coal Creek Heritage Trail back to Ridgemont Drive.

Stage 2: Single lane alternating with flaggers will be set-up providing access with delays along Pine Avenue.

Expected Duration: July 16 from 7:00 a.m. until July 17 at 6:00 p.m.

Stage 3: Two-way traffic with construction zone delineation.

Expected Duration: July 20 from 7:00 a.m. until July 21 at 6:00 p.m.

Water Quality Advisory

Crews will be connecting water service to the site on Tuesday, July 14. During this time water pressure will be reduced for all residents in the Ridgemont neighbourhood. Residents can expect low to no water pressure between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The City will be issuing a Water Quality Advisory for impacted residents on Tuesday, July 14, and it is expected to be in place until July 17, subject to satisfactory water quality test results.

While the associated health risks are minimal, the City of Fernie and Interior Health recommend that children, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems, and anyone seeking additional protection drink boiled water or a safe alternative until further notice. For these at-risk populations, water intended for drinking, washing fruits or vegetables, making juice or ice, or brushing teeth should be boiled for one minute.

A notice of the upcoming Water Quality Advisory has been distributed to impacted residents, and neighbouring areas have received written notice from the contractor outlining the traffic impacts, project timeline, alternate routes, and potential impacts.
