Notice of Nomination

City of Fernie and School District No. 5 – 2026 General Local Elections

Public Notice is given to the electors of the City of Fernie that nominations for the offices of:

City of Fernie:

Mayor - one (1), Councillors - six (6)

School District No. 5 (Southeast Kootenay):

School Trustee - one (1)

will be received by the Chief Election Officer or a designated person, as follows:

By hand, mail or other delivery service: City Hall. 501-3rd Ave., Box 190, Fernie BC V0B 1M0 - 9:00 am Tuesday, September 1, 2026 - 4:00 pm Friday, September 11, 2026 (Excluding statutory holidays and weekends).

By fax to: (250) 423-3034 - 9:00 am Tuesday, September 1, 2026 - 4:00 pm Friday, September 11, 2026.

By email to:  electionsofficer@fernie.ca

Originals of faxed or emailed nomination documents must be received by the Chief Election Officer by 4:00 pm on Friday, September 11, 2026.

Nomination forms are available now at City Hall or online at Fernie.ca/election until the close of the nomination period.

 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR OFFICE: A person is qualified to be nominated, elected, and to hold office as a member of local government if they meet the following criteria:

  • Canadian citizen;
  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day, Saturday, October 17, 2026;
  • resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day nomination papers are filed; and
  • not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election in British Columbia or being nominated for, being elected to or holding the office, or be otherwise disqualified by law.

 

CAMPAIGN PERIOD EXPENSE LIMITS: In accordance with the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act,for the 2026 general local election, the following expense limits for candidates during the campaign period apply:

Mayor                          $12,323.78       

Councillor                      $6,161.89        

School Trustee              $6,161.89

 

THIRD PARTY ADVERTISING LIMITS : In accordance with the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act, for the 2026 general local elections, the following third party advertising limits apply:

                                                    $924.28
