Log Jams on Elk River Safety Advisory
July 30, 2026
Please be aware that there are multiple dangerous log jams near town on the Elk River. Signs are installed warning river users of significant hazards near the Stanford Inn.
If you are enjoying time on the Elk River here are some safety tips to keep in mind
- Wear a Lifejacket: Always put on a personal flotation device (PFD) before boating, paddling, or fishing on a river, rather than just keeping it in the craft.
- Supervise Children: Keep children within immediate reach and watch them closely at all times near moving water.
- Avoid River Swimming: Minimize direct swimming in fast-flowing rivers due to hidden hazards like undercurrents, snags, and changing depths.
- Skip Ankle Leashes: Never use an ankle or calf leash while paddleboarding in moving water, as it can snag on submerged logs or rocks and trap you under the current.
- Stay Sober: Do not consume alcohol or drugs before or during any river or water activities, as they impair judgment, balance, and coordination.
- Use the Buddy System: Never explore or recreate on a river alone; always bring a companion.
- Bring Control: Always have a paddle and a steerable watercraft so you can avoid log jams and hazards.
- Share Your Plan: Tell someone your exact entry point, your exit point, and the time you expect to finish.
- Know the Route: Stick to manageable, well-known sections of the river, for the Elk River in Fernie this is the North Fernie bridge to the downtown bridge.
- Report Lost Gear: If you lose a tube, board, or other watercraft but everyone is safe, call local authorities so they do not start a false search.
Please remember to always exercise caution when recreating on our waterways.
