Heavy Rainfall Straining Wastewater System
March 20, 2026
Heavy overnight rain, with more expected throughout the day, is putting significant pressure on the City’s wastewater system.
Current flows are extremely high, and several lift stations are at risk of being overwhelmed. To manage the excess volume, crews are now using vactor trucks to transport wastewater to the sewage lagoons for proper treatment.
To prevent a system-wide failure, we are also preparing for the potential need to activate a temporary bypass directly to the Elk River. This measure would only be used as a last resort to protect critical infrastructure.
Reducing the amount of water entering the system is the most effective way you can help right now:
- Check your connections: Ensure sump pumps, downspouts, and perimeter drains are not connected to the sanitary sewer system. Downspouts should discharge onto lawns or gravel areas where water can safely disperse, and sump pumps must drain outside, not into indoor plumbing or floor drains.
- Conserve water: Delay laundry, dishwashing, and showering, and limit flushing wherever possible.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping us protect our community’s wastewater infrastructure. We will continue to share updates as conditions evolve.
