Flood Watch Update

LAST UPDATE POSTED MAY 31, 2026 AT 3:00PM

Approximately 30 millimetres of rain has fallen over the past 24 hours. Current forecasting from the Province is calling for an additional 30–50 millimetres of rain over the next three days, with most of that rainfall expected within the next 24 hours.

Cooler temperatures have slowed the snow melt; there is still potential for river levels to rise further as the rainfall reaches our local waterways.

We're advising residents to stay away from rivers and creeks while water levels are high and during extreme weather events as water levels can change rapidly.

During the recent power outage, City crews worked through the night to ensure backup generators were operational and that critical systems remained functional.

We continue to monitor conditions and forecasts closely. Another update will be provided tomorrow.

The Flood Watch for the Elk Valley remains in place. Fernie is expected to see rain and thunderstorms starting this evening with sustained rainfall over the next few days.

River levels are expected to continue to rise with the rainfall and melting snowpack, with the potential to cause flooding conditions.

We're advising residents to stay well back from rivers and creeks when water levels are high and during extreme weather events as water levels can change rapidly.

The City has activated its flood response plan and is ready to respond to changing conditions. We are continuing to monitor river levels and forecasts and will provide daily updates as the situation progresses.

If you are concerned about localized flooding, you can access the City’s self-fill sandbag station next to the City’s Operations yard on Railway Ave. Bags are provided, please bring your own shovel and gloves.
