Fire Prevention Week 2026 - Charge into Fire Safety

October 4 to 10 is Fire Prevention Week 2026, an annual campaign dedicated to helping people reduce the risk of fire at home, work, and in their communities. This year's theme,"Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower," focuses on the safe use and charging of lithium-ion battery-powered devices.

Many of the devices we use every day, including phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, scooters, and toys, are powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. While these batteries are safe when used properly, damaged batteries or unsafe charging practices can lead to overheating, fires, or explosions.

The Fernie Fire Rescue team has been sharing important fire safety messages with local students through the Learn Not to Burn program. Throughout September and early October, firefighters visited Grade 3 classrooms to teach students about fire prevention, home escape planning, smoke alarms, and other essential fire safety skills.

The program will culminate on Friday, October 9, with the annual Fire Chief for a Day event. One student from each participating Grade 3 classroom will be selected to spend part of the day with Fernie Fire Rescue, learning firsthand about the work our firefighters do to keep our community safe.

Residents can also take a few simple steps at home to reduce the risk of battery-related fires:

  • Use the charger and cord that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
  • Charge devices on hard, flat surfaces such as a table or countertop.
  • Avoid charging devices on beds, couches, or under pillows where heat can build up.
  • Stop using a device if it becomes unusually hot, starts to swell, emits smoke, or has a strange smell.
  • Unplug devices when charging is complete.
  • Charge larger items such as e-bikes and scooters outside when possible and away from exits and escape routes.

Fernie Fire Rescue also encourages residents to use Fire Prevention Week as an opportunity to test smoke alarms, review home escape plans, and refresh on your designated outdoor meeting place.
