Fernie Celebrates Groundbreaking for New Childcare Centre and Affordable Homes
March 23, 2026

This month, we celebrated the official ground breaking for the new Pine Avenue Child Care and Affordable Housing Project that will deliver 98 new childcare spaces and 27 housing units for our community.
We’re excited to be a partner in this important project, alongside Elk Valley Family Society and Elk Valley Childcare Society, which reflects years of collaboration, planning, and shared commitment to supporting local families. The project partners have worked diligently to bring this vision to life and we look forward to seeing construction begin this spring.
“The City of Fernie is proud to contribute the land needed to make this project possible, and even prouder of the collaborative effort that brought us to this milestone,” said Mayor Nic Milligan. “By working closely with our partners, we are advancing a solution that delivers both the childcare spaces and affordable homes our community urgently needs, and it’s exciting to see construction set to get underway.”

The Childcare Centre will be located at 302 Pine Avenue, adjacent to the Fernie Aquatic Centre grounds.
This project is made possible through the support of our funding partners: the Ministry of Education and Child Care (MECC), BC Housing, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Columbia Basin Trust, and Elk Valley Resources (Glencore).
