City Breaks Ground on new Fire Hall

The City of Fernie has officially broken ground on a new Fire Hall, marking an important milestone for this urgently needed facility.
The Fire Hall has been designed as a modern, efficient facility that prioritizes emergency response, fire fighter health and safety, and long‑term operational flexibility. Covering 15,919 square feet on a 2.25-acre parcel, the Fire Hall features four pull-through double-loaded apparatus bays, an integrated hose tower, and a multipurpose training room that will also function as the City’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). The multipurpose room is a bookable space, providing another additional meeting space for our community.
Construction of the purpose-built facility is now underway, and once complete will provide Fernie Fire and Emergency Services with a safe and permanent fire hall to serve our growing community for years to come. Construction will continue over the next year with an operation fire hall anticipated for late 2027.
The project’s progression to the construction phase is the result of extensive work and collaboration over several years and reflects the collective efforts of the internal project team, volunteers serving on the Community Working Group, and our construction and design partners. The pre-planning phase began in 2023 and included community engagement and site selection. Over the past two years the project moved through planning and design phases and reached 100% final design and construction contract award earlier this year.
In 2022, Fernie Fire and Emergency Services was temporarily relocated to operate out of the City’s old Public Works Office following the decommissioning of the previous Fire Hall due to significant structural issues and limited functionality. At that time, the Fire Hall Replacement Project was initiated to provide Fernie Fire and Emergency Services with a purpose-built fire hall to continue to provide essential fire protection and emergency services to the community.
The City is grateful to be receiving $7 million in funding for the project through the Strategic Priorities Fund. Thank you to the Government of Canada, Province of British Columbia, and the Union of BC Municipalities.
