City and RDEK Team Up for Family Safety Day
April 28, 2026
Residents of the Elk Valley are invited to take part in Family Safety Day May 9 as the City of Fernie and Regional District of East Kootenay’s (RDEK) East Kootenay Emergency Management Program have teamed up to make the annual event bigger than ever.
“Family Safety Day has always been a strong, well-attended event built around collaboration with our regional partners,” says Scott Robinson, the City of Fernie’s Deputy Fire Chief and Emergency Program Coordinator. “Working with the RDEK to co-host this year’s event builds on that success by bringing even more knowledge, resources, and expertise together in one place for our community, and holding the event in the spring during Emergency Preparedness Week helps families prepare at the start of our local emergency season.”
The free, family-friendly event will feature information, interactive games, apparatus displays, and giveaways all centered around personal preparedness. Some of the organizations that will be participating include the East Kootenay Emergency Management Program, East Kootenay FireSmart™ Program, local fire departments, Search and Rescue, the East Kootenay Amateur Radio Club, Salvation Army, BC Emergency Health Services, RCMP, and Ambassador Wild.
“From being able to pick up information or ask questions, to entering for the giveaways, checking out the emergency apparatus on display, or registering for the Regional Evacuation Notification system, there will be all kinds of things to see and do,” says RDEK Protective Services Manager Christina Carbrey. “We are grateful to be able to partner with the City of Fernie and help residents across the Valley become better aware and prepared.”
Family Safety Day runs Saturday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of City Hall, 501 3rd Avenue, Fernie B.C.
