2026 Traffic Improvements

4A Avenue Traffic Calming

In 2025 the City of Fernie had ISL Engineering determine if motorists were using a local street, 4A Avenue, as an alternative to the designated Urban Collector roads, and speeding through that residential area. The study confirmed those activities were occurring and proposed several countermeasures to discourage shortcutting and reducing vehicle speed to improve safety and livability for residents. The City is going ahead with two of the recommendations by creating two new all-way stop control intersections along the route; one at 4A Avenue and 2nd Street, and the other at 4th Avenue and 3rd Street.

Downtown Speed Zone

In 2025 the City of Fernie had ISL Engineering determine if it was appropriate to reduce speed limits throughout the historic downtown area, which includes two schools that do not currently have school zone designation. The study confirmed justification of school zones and recommended a 30 km/hr zone for the entire historic downtown to improve driver consistency. The City will be installing signage this summer to delineate this zone, a three block by six block section of town encompassing 4th Street through 9th Street, from 3rd Ave to the railway tracks.

Anticipated to occur in July.

Mountview Pedestrian Safety Improvements

Two intersections in the Mountview neighbourhood, Mt Ingram Street at Mt Trinity Avenue and Mt Klauer Street at Mt Trinity Avenue will be upgraded with curb extensions, marked crosswalks and signage to improve the pedestrian experience. The updated crosswalk locations will shorten the pedestrian crossing distances, reduce pedestrian exposure to traffic, improve visibility between pedestrians and motorist and lower right-turn vehicle speeds.  Example below of the Mt. Klauer improvements.

Anticipated to be installed mid July through August.
