Notice of Permissive Tax Exemption Bylaw Amendment

In accordance with section 227 of the Community Charter, the City of Fernie will be considering an amendment to Tax Exemption Bylaw No. 2524 to exempt properties from taxation for a maximum of three years.

The bylaw received its first three readings at the Regular Council Meeting of October 14, 2025, and Council will consider adoption at a Special Council Meeting on October 30, 2025.

Council uses permissive tax exemptions to support local organizations that benefit the community through enhancement of our citizens’ quality of life. Permissive tax exemptions are distinct from statutory exemptions and are generally only considered if the organization benefits the community by providing recreation programs or facilities, programs and facilities for youth, seniors, or other special needs groups, offers cultural or educational programs, or offers services to the public in a formal partnership with the municipality.
