Mountview Dike & Coal Creek Bin Wall Rehabilitation Wraps Up

The City is pleased to have wrapped up our fifth major flood mitigation initiative just in advance of the November rains. This project was able to rehabilitate portions of two of City’s existing pieces of flood protection infrastructure; the Mountview Dike and the Coal Creek Bin Wall. This project, valued at $1.98 million, was grant funded.

The Mountview Dike is approximately 2,100 m long and located to the north and west of the Mountview neighbourhood on the left bank of the Elk River. The Coal Creek Bin Wall is approximately 235 m long and is located on the left bank of Coal Creek, just upstream of the confluence of the Elk River and Coal Creek.

Originally, the scope of rehabilitation was armouring 350 m of the dike at the confluence of the Elk River and Coal Creek, along with bin repairs for the Bin Wall and scour protection installed within the Coal Creek. Due to lower-than expected tender bids, the City was able to add another item into the project, within the budget. The Mountview Dike was raised to flood construction levels surrounding the Mt. Minton entrance to the James White Park.

While the work was more difficult than anticipated, the contractors were able to complete the work by November. Next spring will see Sharpe’s Field back open as a play field for the community.
