Afternoon Emergency Update: Current Conditions
December 17, 2025
The situation is improving this afternoon following a major storm system that placed significant pressure on the City’s wastewater system.
Fernie received approximately 70mm of rain over a 24-hour period, with sustained heavy rainfall through the morning, followed by snow and strong winds. Power outages this morning and equipment issues created additional challenges and required portable pumps to help manage elevated flows.
We continue to discharge effluent from the Main Sewage Lift Station to ensure critical infrastructure is protected, and we are actively monitoring all facilities to ensure system stability. Required sampling and reporting is being conducted.
Localized flooding has also caused issues in some areas, and our streets crews have been working throughout the day on drainage issues. The self-fill sandbag station, next to the Operations Facility on Railway Ave, is open for any impacted residents to fill sandbags (please bring your own shovel.)
Water conservation remains important. Residents and businesses are asked to continue limiting laundry, showers, dishwashing, and all non-essential water use.
A reminder to all residents to take the time to sign up for Voyent Alert! To receive emergency notifications via text or phone in the event of an evacuation alert or order. Click here for more information on how to register.
