Coal Creek Road Closure

Coal Creek Road will be closed effective 6pm this evening (June 10, 2022), beyond its intersection with River Road Extension Forest Service Road due to high flows causing erosion to the road in various locations past this point.

The current Coal Creek levels are not currently causing significant concerns further downstream of this location, within the City limits. City crews will monitor water levels downstream of this location, and along the Elk River, over the weekend.

The City and the Ministry of Transportation will be putting up barriers and signage to mark the closure, and will be reassessing the closure after the weekend.

As we enter our spring freshet period, please exercise extra caution around fast-moving water, and ensure that you are prepared in the event of flooding.

Public self-fill sandbag stations are set up at in two locations, for anyone living in areas prone to flooding:

  • Railway Ave & Ridgemont Ave (next to TJs Autobody)
  • Main Sewage Lift Station parking lot off Mt. McLean Dr at Mt.Trinity

You can stay informed in case of evacuation orders or alerts in critical events by signing up to the free Regional Evacuation Notice System.

The RDEK Flood Preparedness Guide  issued earlier this spring, is a great resource with more information  about what the Region does to prepare for freshet, and what you can do to ensure you are prepared.
