City Welcomes $1.2m in Grant Funding for New Skatepark

The Federal and Provincial Governments have confirmed the City has been successful in securing $1,282,572 in funding through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, Rural and Northern Infrastructure stream.

Originally applied for in 2020, the confirmed funding for this project will allow for the design and redevelopment of Fernie’s skatepark which has reached the end of its serviceable life and establishing a hub for active recreation in the community.

Intended to serve children, youth, adults, and families, this project is planned as an integrated, modern, site-built concrete skateboard/all-wheel park. This area is envisioned as part of an "outdoor hub" for locals and visitors alike to gather, connect, and explore the community. The park's design will also consider accommodating programming opportunities like lessons, competitions, and community events.

Mayor Ange Qualizza says, “This is an exciting project that will renew an important piece of ageing infrastructure and provide for accessible and inclusive recreation in our City. Skateparks build friendship and community, we are looking forward to kicking off engagement and design with the community and New Line Skateparks.” Adding, “We thank Federal Ministers Joyce Murray and Dominic LeBlanc, and Provincial Minister Nathan Cullen for this announcement and their support for this project.”

In preparing the grant the City of Fernie conducted a public survey to gauge community support for the redevelopment of the City's existing skateboard park, with 320 citizens reviewing the grant application and project information, and 166 completing an online survey showing 92.2% of respondents in favour of a skatepark redevelopment, and 93.4% also supporting expanding the project as part of an outdoor recreation facility hub.

New Line Skateparks was the successful proponent in a preliminary RFP process and will lead the design and construction of this project. The City expects consultation and design to take place during 2022, with construction in 2023. The total value of the project is $1,425,080 with additional community-hub elements to be designed and budgeted through the process.
