Multi-Purpose Community Centre Funding Outcome

The City of Fernie has been notified that we were unsuccessful in our applications for grant funding for the construction of a new Multi-Purpose Community Centre (MPCC).

Federal and Provincial funding was announced in the fall of 2018 that was specific to community, recreation and culture infrastructure through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) – Rural and Northern Communities fund, and ICIP – Community, Culture and Recreation Program.

The City applied for grants through these 2 available funding streams, seeking to fund between 75% and 90% of the MPCC.

Given the unsuccessful applications and the current COVID-19 situation, the City has determined it is not the appropriate time to pursue borrowing or to engage with the public on reviewing the MPCC project.

Once the City has recovered from the COVID-19 emergency, staff will provide Council with options for re-engaging with the community regarding the scope, scale, phasing, and importance of the MPCC project.
