Fairy Creek Trail Extension Project

The contract has been awarded and the Fairy Creek Trail Extension Project is set to get underway in the coming weeks. The project aims to address safety and inclusive access concerns by providing a separate commuter route alongside Highway 3 for pedestrians and cyclists to get between town and the Ghostrider Commercial Area.

In 2016, the City of Fernie in partnership with the Fernie Trails Alliance constructed the Fairy Creek pedestrian and cyclist bridge with the goal of creating a safe route, separate from vehicular traffic, along the highway corridor. The first phase of the trail was also constructed, extending from the new Fairy Creek Pedestrian Bridge to the Elk River bridge.

Thanks to a grant funding opportunity from Bike BC, the City was able to bring this project, identified in the City of Fernie Trails Masterplan, forward in 2019. The Fairy Creek Trail Extension project will finish the work started in 2016 and provide a complete pathway alongside the highway corridor that is wholly separated from vehicle traffic.

The project has a price tag of nearly $150,000 and is being made possible in large part thanks to a $70,000 grant from Bike BC.

Work is expected to commence in the coming weeks and take approximately four weeks to complete. There will be limited disruptions to pedestrian and cycling traffic in the area while this work is underway, and the public is asked to adhere to any posted signage.
