Elk Valley Accessibility Plan

On May 20, 2025, Council endorsed the Elk Valley Accessibility Plan, marking a key step forward for accessibility in our region.

The City of Fernie developed the plan in partnership with the Districts of Sparwood and Elkford, with valuable input from the Elk Valley Accessibility Advisory Committee. This collaborative effort ensures consistent support and a shared commitment to accessibility across all three municipalities.

The Elk Valley Accessibility Plan is a practical tool to identify, remove, and prevent accessibility barriers for individuals and focuses on six shared regional priorities:

  • Built environment

  • Communication and information

  • Employment and training

  • Emergency preparedness

  • Policies and planning

  • Transportation and mobility

The plan will now guide capital planning, service delivery, and policy development to enhance accessibility and foster greater inclusivity throughout the Elk Valley.
