Flag raising application
The City of Fernie is committed to the respectful and proper display of flags at municipal facilities and on municipally owned property, in alignment with national and provincial standards.
Flags Displayed
- City Hall: National Flag of Canada, City of Fernie Flag, Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it Flag
- Fernie Courthouse: National Flag of Canada, Provincial Flag of British Columbia
- Visitor Information Centre & Rotary Park: National Flag of Canada
Half-Masting Protocol
Flags at City Hall and the Fernie Courthouse may be flown at half-mast as a sign of respect during times of mourning, including:
- Death of national and provincial leaders, elected representatives, or local officials
- Death of a City of Fernie employee or an RCMP officer serving in Fernie
- Days of significance:
- April 28 – Day of Mourning for Persons Killed or Injured in the Workplace
- September 30 – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
- October 17 – Anniversary of the Fernie Memorial Arena Tragedy
- November 11 – Remembrance Day
The Mayor and Chief Administrative Officer may also authorize half-masting for individuals, events, or days of significance not specifically listed.
Special Occasion Flags
The City of Fernie may fly a special occasion flag to celebrate a date or event of significance to the community.
- Special occasion flags are flown in place of the City of Fernie flag at City Hall only.
- Requests must be submitted at least four (4) weeks in advance.
- Requests are provided to Council as correspondence for consideration.
Application Process
To request a special occasion flag raising:
- Complete the Flag Raising Request Form.
- Submit the form to Corporate Administration:
- Email: cityhall@fernie.ca
- In person or by mail: City Hall, 501 3rd Avenue, Box 190, Fernie, BC V0B 1M0
- Applications must be submitted a minimum of 4 weeks prior to the requested date.
- Approved requests will be confirmed by Corporate Administration, and applicants will be contacted with instructions for delivering and picking up their flag.
