City Receives Community Firefighting Grant
April 27, 2026
The City of Fernie is welcoming $30,000 in Provincial grant funding. Fernie is grateful to be one of 86 fire departments in the province to receive funding this year, through the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF), to strengthen volunteer and composite fire departments. Fernie Fire and Emergency Services falls under composite fire departments, having a mix of paid staff and volunteers.
The City is seeing an increase in the construction of multistorey residential buildings, and the awarded funds will be used to buy equipment to better enable Fernie Fire and Emergency Services to respond to emergencies in these types of buildings. The grant will also be used to cover the costs of training courses for both career and auxiliary firefighters, again with a focus on responding to these new, much taller buildings.
In total, the B.C. Government is providing nearly four million dollars this year to support composite and volunteer fire departments.
