New Pedestrian Lights Installed at École Isabella Dicken Elementary School

The City has installed new pedestrian activated flashing beacons at ÉIDES for pedestrians crossing 13th Street at 2nd Ave. The beacons were purchased by the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) at School District 5 (SD5) using funding from the Province’s Vision Zero Grant program.  Pedestrians will be encouraged to cross only at the north side of the 2nd Ave & 13th Street intersection, as opposed to the south side of the same intersection. Pedestrians should cross 2nd Ave at the stop signs to make their way to the flashing beacons. The City will be removing the painted crossing on the other side of the intersection. This will improve the predictability of pedestrians at the intersection and reduce driver-pedestrian interaction.

A second speed reader board, also funded by the grant, has been installed on 13th street to alert drivers to their speed as they enter the school zone from the tracks.

The City is pleased to be able to partner with SD5 and the PAC to continue to support safety improvements in Fernie school zones.
