Fall and Winter Bike and e-Bike Reminders

Many Fernie residents and visitors are still enjoying the trails and biking around town. Here are a few reminders to help keep everyone safe as the days get shorter and road conditions change.

  • Between sunset and sunrise, cyclists must use a front-mounted white light and rear-mounted red light and reflector. Be aware of slippery patches from frost, rain, or snow, and watch for potholes or debris on the road.
  • Remember to be considerate of other road users and share the path. When overtaking pedestrians or other cyclists on multi-use trails, slow down and use a bell or call out before passing. Cyclists on e-bikes are asked to keep their speed down to ensure an enjoyable experience for all path users.
  • Cyclists are not permitted to ride on City sidewalks and must yield to pedestrians.
  • Cyclists must follow the rules of the road and adhere to all traffic control devices, ride single file on the right side of the laneway, and use clear signals to indicate turning, slowing down, or stopping.
  • Make sure you ‘Respect the Brain Bucket' and wear a helmet, and don’t ride impaired or distracted.
