City Welcomes New Youth Councillor

The City of Fernie is excited to welcome Dylan Annis as the Youth Councillor for the 2023-2024 term.

Dylan, a Grade 12 student and Head Boy at the Fernie Academy, is also a member of the Fernie Youth Action Committee and teacher at the Motion Dance Academy. He is looking forward to learning about how ideas and community concerns are discussed at the Council table and solutions are created through policy and Council decisions. During his term as Youth Councillor, Dylan hopes to improve the connection between the city’s two high schools, establishing a regular meeting of students from both schools to discuss concerns or ideas students have for the community, and raising Council awareness of these issues.

Mayor Milligan noted that “Council was very impressed by the caliber of candidates that we interviewed for this role. We are very excited to see what Dylan will achieve during his term as Youth Councillor.”

The Youth Councillor is a one-year volunteer position that will bring a youth perspective to Council matters and discussions, raising awareness of the issues facing youth in Fernie and inform the community about city operations and activities. Council recently adopted an updated policy for the program to include a $1,000 educational scholarship and support for the Youth Councillor to attend the BC Youth Parliament in Victoria, BC.
