Downtown Parking Revitalization Project Nearing Completion

The City of Fernie Downtown Parking Revitalization Project aimed at creating additional parking spaces in the Downtown area is nearly completion with just the redevelopment of 1st Ave still to wrap up.

The $468,750 in grant funding from Pacific Economic Development Canada has been used for paving and formalizing existing parking stalls and creating over 50 new parking stalls, including 5 accessible stalls, at the Railyard Dog Park, Skatepark and on 1st Avenue between 4th Street and 6th Street

The City’s contractor has been busy this week reconfiguring 1st Avenue from a two-way to a one-way street to allow for the addition of new angle parking stalls. The section of 1 Ave has been converted into a one-way street already while construction is underway, and it will remain a one-way southbound street permanently once the work wraps up. During construction on 1st Ave parallel parking on the west side of the street remains open.

The new parking lots at the Railyard Dog Park and the Skatepark have been completed and are open and available to the public for use.

The City is contributing $156,250 for a total project budget of $625,000. The Downtown Parking Revitalization Project is expected to be complete by the end of the month.
