Annex Dike Improvement Project Nearing Completion

The City of Fernie is excited to announce that work on the Annex Dike Improvement Project and Fernie Valley Pathway Section 1B is nearing completion and the Annex Park and the connected trail network is being re-opened to the public.

Over the summer and fall City contractors have been working on three connected grant-funded projects aimed at providing improved flood protection and active transportation connectivity between neighbourhoods.

  • Annex Dike Flood Protection Improvements: providing 1 in 500 year flood protection for the Annex neighbourhood by raising the existing dike and reconstructing the dike slope and crest.
  • Fernie Valley Pathway Segment1B: enhancing our active transportation network from West Fernie Bridge to Provincial Park Road.
  • Annex Neighbourhood Active Transportation Network Improvements: improving mobility and active transportation along the Annex Dike.

The completion of the Annex Dike improvements means that 900 residences, 113 commercial properties, 6 industrial properties, and 2,000+ citizens living in the Annex neighbourhood now have improved prtotection from flooding.

There will be minor intermittent closures until mid-December while the contractor ties up some remaining small components of the projects. We would like to thank the community for respecting the closures over the summer and fall and for continuing to follow any posted signage as the project wraps up.

The combined value of these three important projects is $7.178 million.
