Love Food Hate Waste Campaign
May 13, 2019
The City of Fernie is proud to support the Love Food Hate Waste Program which is a national initiative with the goal of reducing food waste in Canada. The Program aims to change Canadians’ behaviors around food and dramatically reduce the significant amount of food wasted across the country every day.
Did you know that one-third of all food produced globally is wasted? The truth is that Canadians are throwing out more food than they realized - food that could, at one point, have been eaten. 63% of household food waste is avoidable. We encourage our residents to participate in reducing food waste from your household and therefore, reducing the amount of waste in our landfill.
Love Food Hate Waste is here to help us all make the most of the food we love.
LFHW Canada is modelled on the LFHW campaign in the UK – a proven behaviour change campaign that, in its first five years, helped cut avoidable food waste by 21 percent, saving UK consumers £13 billion. Food isn’t garbage and keeping food out of the garbage is good for our environment and our pocketbooks.
