  • Highway 3 Closed - Warming Centre Opened
    February 10, 2017

    UPDATE: DriveBC estimates Highway 3 (Junction 93 to Ski Hill) will reopen at 9:30am MST Feb 10/17. No word yet on Sparwood to BC/AB border.

    Freezing rain has resulted in the closure of Highway 3 from the intersection of Highway 3 and 93 (at the ice cream stand) to the BC/Alberta border. A warming centre is being established at the Fernie Community Centre at 901 6 Ave for travellers affected by the road closure. No word yet on when the road may be reopened.

    Conditions are treacherous across much of the East Kootenay and drivers are urged to stay off the roads / highways unless travel is necessary. Please check DriveBC for road condition updates.

  • Highway Conditions Update
    February 7, 2017

    Highway 3 is now open in both directions between Sparwood and the BC/Alberta Border. DriveBC is also reporting that the road is no longer closed between Elko and Fernie due to a High Avalanche hazard. Travellers are urged to check DriveBC for latest road conditions before travelling.

  • Warming Centre to open in Fernie
    February 6, 2017

    Fernie Emergency Social Services advise a Warming Centre will open at the Fernie Community Centre located at 901 - 6th Avenue (Highway 3) at 3pm today, Mon Feb 6, 2017 due to extended highway closures. The centre will provide stranded motorists with group accommodation as necessary, however, attendees will be responsible for their own meals.

    February 6, 2017

    Public advised Highway 3 at the B.C. Alberta border remains closed in both directions Monday morning while the highway between Elko and Fernie is also closed. Local City of Fernie crews working on clearing local roads ask for public assistance by residents parking vehicles in driveways or in compliance with parking policy.
