The City of Fernie is inviting applications for the position of Winter Traffic Control Personnel, Casual. Employment for this position will be on a casual basis, with no guarantee of hours, and will be part of CUPE Local 2093. This position is posted internally and externally, concurrently.
Position Overview
Reporting to the Manager of Public Works or their delegate, Traffic Control Personnel are responsible the safe passage of vehicles and pedestrians through or around active work zones. The position requires a self-motivated team player with high internal drive. Tasks generally include creating a Traffic control plan along with setting up and removing traffic control devices with limited supervision. Public relations and interpersonal skills are essential to work with the public. The position is physically demanding and labor intensive with the requirement to work shift work.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide clear and concise signals to approaching traffic to allow for safe vehicle passage around the work area.
- Set up and removal of traffic control devices.
- Operates various light duty trucks.
- Completes daily inspections, performs minor maintenance (such as fuelling) city equipment used in accordance with procedure and policy.
- Development of Traffic control plans
- Efficiently and accurately completes paperwork, logs, records, collects, and reviews data.
- Works in accordance with the City of Fernie’s Safety Management System
- Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License
- N print Driver’s Abstract
- Valid BC TCP Certification
- Previous traffic control experience.
- Basic computer skills with ability to use smart phones and tablets.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Effective time management skills with ability to take initiative under limited supervision.
- Knowledgeable and in compliance with current WorksafeBC TCP regulations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team with adaptability.
- Critical thinking skills with an ability to proactively troubleshoot.
- Strong documentation skills
- Effective communication skills; both verbal and written.
- Experience working around heavy construction equipment.
