The City of Fernie is inviting applications for up to 2 casual positions of Janitor/Laborer in the Parks, Facility, and Recreation Department. These are Casual postings that may include weekend and evening work. The successful applicant will be expected to maintain and supervise the activities in City facilities while performing Janitorial, maintenance, and security duties.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
We require energetic individuals who have the physical ability and agility to perform manual work in a variety of cleaning and related duties in and around City buildings and facilities. Ideally, the successful candidate will have a strong background in building Janitorial/Custodial work in a parks and recreation environment and is self-motivated and reliable with attention to detail. This position will be expected to work evenings and weekends covering absence due to sick leave, vacation leave, or any approved absence or to augment the workforce during peak periods to meet demands of facility cleaning and monitoring while maintaining a professional demeanor to the public and colleagues.
Reporting to the Acting Director of Parks, Facilities and Recreation, and supervised by the Chief of Parks and Facilities the Casual Janitor/Laborer is a non-benefited position that involves a wide range of responsibilities, primarily cleaning, within the Parks and Facilities and Recreation Department. The Casual Janitor/Laborer works in a safe and responsible manner, exercises some independent judgment and initiative while exercising good public relations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Valid BC Driver’s License, minimum Class 5
• Positive attitude
• Physically fit to meet the demand of manual tasks for long hours.
• Cleaning Experience and knowledge (BSW Level 1 preferred)
PHYSICAL AND STRESS LEVEL REQUIREMENTS
• Good basic health and physical condition as the job requirements entail strenuous physical activity.
• Ability to multitask as the job has short lead times and deadlines.
• Exposure to loud mechanical noise is frequent in this position.
