National Day of Mourning
April 24, 2018
Last night, City Council honoured the upcoming National Day of Mourning with a moment of silence.
This year, the Day of Mourning is particularly profound, after City workers Wayne Hornquist, Lloyd Smith, and contractor Jason Podloski lost their lives in the tragic incident at Fernie Memorial Arena last October. Altogether, 158 B.C. workers died from a workplace injury or disease in 2017.
“This year will feel very different,” said Mayor Mary Giuliano. “We lost neighbours and friends. It will be personal, emotional, and difficult – but Fernie is strong.”
On Friday, City Council will also hold a moment of silence with City staff in advance of the National Day of Mourning on April 28, at the Miner’s Walk plaque immediately outside City Hall.
“Nothing is more important than making sure hardworking men and women get home safely to their families every day,” said Mayor Giuliano. “As we work to ensure no other communities and families suffer a tragedy like this, we won’t ever forget Wayne, Lloyd, and Jason.”
