Description:

The City of Fernie is now accepting applications for Operator 1 Full Time in the Public Works Department.  This is a full-time position that will require shift work.  The successful applicant will be expected to work weekends, statutory holidays, and general coverage (holidays, periodic leaves, events etc.)  for departmental need.  The successful applicant must be able to accommodate frequent short-term shift changes.  Wages will be in accordance with the C.U.P.E Collective Agreement. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Working under the general direction of the Operations Supervisor, the Operator I will be expected to undertake some training from the employer on equipment, in areas such as snow removal, road repair, water & sewer systems and fire hydrants.  

  • All duties outlined for a Laborer/Janitor/Operator
  • Operating equipment such as grass cutting machines, Bobcat, pavement cutter, snow blowers, etc
  • Painting, simple plumbing and basic carpentry
  • Weeding, seeding, turfing and other ground maintenance 

The successful candidate must meet the following requirements: 

  • Class 3 with Air BC Drivers License 
  • Experience with single axle trucks, bobcat or equivalent equipment 
  • Experience as a Laborer/Janitor with the city, or equivalent experienced knowledge 
  • Candidates with experience on vac truck or loader would be considered an asset
