Description:

The City of Fernie is inviting applications for the position of Maintenance I Full Time, Irregularly Scheduled in the Parks and Facility department.  This is full time position that will require shift work.  The successful applicant will be expected to work weekends, statutory holidays, and general coverage (holidays, periodic leaves, events etc.) for departmental need. Successful applicant must be able to accommodate frequent short-term shift changes.

 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The City of Fernie is actively seeking one individual in the Parks and Facilities Department. We require an energetic individual who has the physical ability and agility to work in the performance of a wide variety of tasks, ideally one who will have a strong background in building maintenance, grounds keeping and arena operations in a parks and recreation environment.  This position will be expected to work shift work including weekends and statutory holidays.

 Reporting to the Manager of Parks and Recreation, the Maintenance I is a full-time benefitted union position which involves a wide range of responsibilities, working within the Parks and Facilities Department. 

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:

  • All duties and responsibilities for Laborer/Janitor;
  • Operating equipment such as: ice machines, Zamboni, grass cutting machines etc.
  • Painting, simple plumbing, basic carpentry;
  • Weeding, seeding, turfing, and other grounds maintenance;
  • Marking and laying out sports fields;
  • Assisting in ice-making;
  • Enforcing rules and regulations;
  • Maintaining good public relations
  • Maintaining simple records, including maintenance records, and inputs computer data;
  • Responsibility for security of equipment, property, buildings and vehicles;
  • Other related duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Applicants shall be performance orientated individuals, able to work well with others and independently with little supervision.  Wages will be in accordance with the current C.U.P.E. Collective Agreement.  Shift work is required. 

MINIMUM REQUIRMENTS:

  • Class 3 with Air BC Driver’s License
  • BC Refrigeration Safety Awareness Certificate
  • Experienced working knowledge of ice maintenance and grounds maintenance.
  • Experience as a Laborer/janitor with the City, or equivalent experienced knowledge.

PHYSICAL AND STRESS LEVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Good basic health and physical condition as the job requirements entail strenuous physical activity.
  • Good mental health as the job has short lead times and deadlines.
  • Exposure to loud mechanical noise is frequent to this position.

 Salary and benefits will be in accordance with current CUPE contract.
