The City of Fernie is actively seeking to fill two (2) temporary full-time Maintenance I positions in the Parks and Facilities Department. 

Position A:  On or about April 15, 2019 – October 15, 2019

Position B:  May 1, 2019 – October 15, 2019

 NATURE OF POSITION: Reporting to the Manager of Parks and Facilities, the Maintenance I position is a full-time non-benefited union position with limited time off and involves a wide range of responsibilities.  Applicants for these positions must be mature, performance-oriented individuals with the ability to work well with others and independently with little supervision.  Ideally, the successful applicants will have a strong background in building maintenance, grounds keeping and facility operations in a parks and recreation environment. 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Class 3 with Air Brakes Endorsement
  • BC Refrigeration Safety Awareness Certificate
  • Experienced working knowledge of parks and playfields

 

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • All duties and responsibilities for Labourer/Janitor;
  • Operating equipment such as skid steers, grass cutting machines, power equipment etc.;
  • Painting, simple plumbing, basic carpentry;
  • Weeding, seeding, turfing, and other grounds maintenance;
  • Marking and laying our sports fields;
  • Enforcing rules and regulations, and maintaining good public relations;
  • Maintaining simple records, including maintenance records;
  • Responsible for securing equipment, property, buildings and vehicles;
  • Other duties as assigned from time to time.

 PHYSICAL AND STRESS LEVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Good basic health and physical condition as the job requirements entail strenuous physical activity.
  • Good mental health as the job has short lead times and deadlines.
  • Exposure to loud mechanical noise is frequent in this position.

 Additional Information

40-hour work week, 10-hour days on a rotational schedule including weekends.

Wage: $34.47 per hour.  This is a non-benefited position with limited time off available.
