  • Clean Up Process Begins

    Residents evacuated earlier this week are now returning to their homes and the focus turns to the clean-up process and ongoing investigation.

    Hazardous material company RAM Environmental and air quality monitoring experts GHD will remain on site to assist with clean-up. Provincial authorities and technical agencies will also continue their investigation.

    The City of Fernie would like to sincerely thank the community and the many volunteers, responders and technical experts for all of their assistance throughout this difficult time.
  • Evacuation Order Lifted

    Update 12:00PM: BC Hydro has confirmed the power outage affected 7 homes only in the evacuation area and not the entire area. These homes are located on 6th Avenue behind the arena. Residents are again advised Not to Open their refrigerators or freezers. Updates to come as soon as possible.

    Update 11:00AM: We have just been alerted the power is out in homes in the evacuation area. Residents are advised Not to Open their refrigerators or freezers until it's determined safe to do so. The City is working with BC Hydro and Interior Health to get more information on this situation as quickly as possible.


    The Evacuation Order issued in relation to the hazardous materials release incident to the area between 9th Street and 13th Street and Highway 3 and 6th Avenue including; Fernie Arena, Fernie Curling Rink, Red Apple, 7-Eleven and Trinity Lodge on October 17, 2017 is fully rescinded.

    It is now safe for residents to return home. We thank everyone for their patience and cooperation as we responded to this emergency.
  • Update: Fernie Memorial Arena Ammonia Leak

    The Emergency Response Team continue working to stabilize conditions to allow safe access to the facility. Samples required by the hazardous materials experts have been sent for testing and we are now awaiting the results of those tests.

    We ask for everyone’s continued patience and want to assure evacuee’s that getting them home safely as quickly as possible remains a top priority.

    The deadline to submit an application for Discretionary Grant Funding for the 2018 budget year is October 31, 2017.

  • Beautification Committee Meeting

    November 1, 2017 9:00am - 10:00am

    The next scheduled meeting for the Beautification Committee will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at 9 am in the meeting room at City Hall.  501-3rd Avenue, Fernie BC.
